Several language tips have been posted here but we are still not done yet discussing the question words. Feeling discouraged? Oh please don’t. There are many kinds of question words but still they are only words, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure them out ;) Prior to this article, we’ve discussed about how to ask someone’s possession using the word “ SIAPA (WHOSE), now we go further using the word “ YANG MANA” to express the same thing. The focus is different though. Although both can be used to ask one’s possession, they are actually slightly different. With the word “SIAPA/WHOSE”, the question focuses on the possessor or the one who possesses the things. Whilst, if you use the word “yang mana”, the focus of the question is the item or thing, especially if there are more than one things, so to ask the listeners which one is theirs. Let’s make it clear with these following examples Ini tas siapa? ( whose bag is this?) The focus of the question is the possessor of the bag. Now, look at this short dialogue where the focus of the questions are the things being possessed. Budi :Tas kamu yang mana ( which one is your bag?) Ani : yang merah ( the red one) Tiara : Sepatu kamu yang mana? (which one is your shoes?) Jono : yang buluk ( the shabby one) The phrase ‘YANG MANA” can be placed at the initial sentenceAndre : Yang mana pacar kamu? ( which one is your gf?)
Agus : Yang cantik, yang pakai baju merah muda. ( the beautiful one, the one who is wearing pink dress)
