The key to master Indonesian is to learn as many words as possible. For the first timer but are already dying to visit the country, I would suggest as everyone suggests, that you need to learn survival phrases to get by. I can assure that the word “BERAPA” falls into that category as you can generate the sentence using the word that will cover various contexts. The Great Dictionary of the Indonesian Language or simply known as KBBI (Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia) defines BERAPA as a question word used to ask number that represents the amount, size, value, price, unit, time. And so, without further ado, let’s see the following examples! Asking price:When asking about the price, you could say: ‘BERAPA + HARGA (PRICE) + NOUN?” Berapa harga buku ini? how much does this book cost? Harga means price, so it literally means “ how much is the price of this book? Berapa harganya? How much does it cost? It’s more common to say this way as the seller and the buyer have shared knowledge about the items being transacted. The bound form –nya refers to non-human, either animate or inanimate noun. So it liteally means “ how much is its price?” Asking about quantity:Berapa tas yang kamu punya? ( how many bags do you have), however it is literally translated into “ how many bags that you have?) Berapa (noun) + yang + SUBJEK + VERBA? Berapa kopi yang kamu minum? (How many cups of coffee do you drink?) Berapa buku yang kamu beli? (How many books do you buy?) Asking about time:When asking about time, pay attention to the word order!
Jam berapa? ( what time is it?) Berapa jam? ( how many hours?) Can you add some more examples? :)

Have you ever been curious about things and were not satisfied with the answers given to you? You may have further queries then to get more and more detailed responses. Curiosity is a good thing! Later, you may want to stay curious even if it is in the language you are learning. Just like in our previous posts, we have equipped you with some wh questions in Indonesian, but those are not enough without knowing this important question word “ WHY” which in bahasa Indonesia it means “ KENAPA”. So Let’s jump out to these examples! KENAPA kamu bicara seperti itu? ( Why do you speak like that?) KENAPA kamu bolos kerja minggu lalu? ( why did you skip working last week/ why were you absent last week?) ** Sometimes it appears after the subject as in the following sentences. It does not change the meaning though whether you want to put it at the initial sentence or after the subject. Kamu KENAPA belum sarapan? ( why haven’t you had your breakfast yet?) Kamu KENAPA sedih? ( WHY are you sad?) It’s easy huh? Now you can stay curious and express yourself in Indonesian, but remember being curious and being nosey are two different things :P
In the previous post, you have learned about how to construct question sentence from the word "APA (WHAT)", but now let's upgrade your Indonesian grammar by learning another "WH" question "WHEN" which in Bahasa Indonesia you can translate the word into KAPAN. The pattern is the same as the question sentence you have learned in the previous post. You can put the question word at the initial or at the end of the sentence. Let's compare the following sentence in English and Indonesian version to see the difference between those two languages. English VersionWhen do you go to the office? Indonesian VersionKAPAN kamu pergi ke kantor? which, literally translated into " when you go to the office?" or you can place the question word at the end of the sentence. Kamu pergi ke kantor KAPAN? (literally, you go to the office when?) |
